2012 Orientation Open to New Membership 12/18/2011

Aloha Future Napili Community Gardeners,

We are fast approaching 2012, and everyone is excited for the New Year at the garden.

Welcome! In order to become a member please attend one of our orientations in January; please see the dates below. During the orientation, please bring your identification (such as a driver’s license), and payment (cash, personal check or money order; made out to Tri-Isle RC&D Council Incorporated with “Napili Community Garden” written on the memo line).

10x20 single plots are $50 for 2012 and 20x20 double plots are $80 for the year. Membership also has to sign the new 2012 waiver, rules and regulations form. If you do not attend one of the January meetings, you will have to wait until the end of March 2012 to receive (and start growing) in your plot, so please try and attend in January so you can get started right away! The orientation also includes a walkthrough of the garden answering any questions that you may have.

Email napiligarden@gmail.com with any questions.

Please choose one of the following dates:

Tuesday, January 3rd 4:00PM to 5:00PM

Saturday, January 7th 3:00PM to 4:00PM

Sunday, January 15th 8:00AM to 9:00AM

Thursday, January 26th 8:00AM to 9:00AM

January Workday:

Saturday, January 28th 9:00AM to 12:00PM

Please park at the Napili Community Garden parking lot at the corner of Napilihau Street traffic light and Highway 30. Please do not park on the dirt road, put park in the NCG paved parking lot. Orientation meetings are rain or shine, so please bring a rain coat if the weather looks overcast. We will meet in the parking lot to take care of the annual payment, and then walk up to the garden as a group.

We will be handing out information on organic gardening, and organic seed companies during the meeting. If interested we will also have a group order at the end of January to help save on shipping, as it is less money to place a bulk order for many of the seeds.

See you at the garden.

Anita

Garden Update... 10/01/2011
0 Comments

Aloha to all,

We would like to start out thanking all those who came out for our September Workday Party. Trees were planted, the outhouse was painted and irrigation pipes were recycled! We are also excited to see a few new faces that joined our garden.

THE LOG BOOK
We understand that not everyone can make workday parties so we now have a Community Garden Projects, Workdays and Tasks Log Book. This book will allow us to track our membership hours to ensure that everyone is fulfilling the much needed three hours of dedicated community work a month.

The projects page will list outstanding work that needs to be done like the tasks of finishing the compost toilet.

The workdays page will list the attendance of our membership and the time, for that month, that they have fulfilled.

The tasks page will list daily chores that need to be attended to throughout the garden like watering the berm and trees. Each task will have a time allotted to it which will count towards your three hours for that month.

Please note that each project and task will need to be verified by the Plot Manager or any other Garden Council member.

IRRIGATION
The water issues have been addressed thanks to Karen, Andy, Charlie, David, Tevita and Mike! Thank so much for your kokua.

Water will always be a continuing issue that we will have to address in different forms. For instance, there is still a leak in the lot above us and in order for it to be fixed the water will need to be turned off. I spoke to management and asked that we be informed of when this will happen and for how long they expect the water to be turned off so that we can prepare.

It would be prudent for us to have a water committee who would help us address these issues and ensure that our system is being used properly. The people on this committee would create a protocol for different water issues that may arise and would be the only individuals touching the water system at key areas. If you are interested in this committee please inform a Garden Council member.

ORIENTATION
We are still looking for an orientation leader to welcome new members, if you enjoy meeting new people and have a passion for the garden then come on out for the position!

EMERGENCY GARDEN COUNCIL MEETING
Due to a few pressing issues, I would like to move up the Garden Council meeting to next Friday, October 7th at 5PM. The place, TBA. All membership is welcome, you don't have to be on the Council to attend. We will be discussing the budget, garden planning, and future community needs. If anyone has any business that they would like to discuss, please contact through email to be added to the agenda.

THE ABLE GARDEN
It has come to my attention that if we truly want to be a community garden then there are steps we need to take to include certain populations. The first step that we should take together is making the garden more friendly for the blind, they are included in our membership and therefore it should be a priority.

The first project in the book will be the building of a path from the lower gate to the picnic tables. There are white rocks scattered throughout the garden, if we gather these rocks and line them along the pathway from the lower gate to the picnic tables it will make it easier for people who have low vision or are legally blind to see.

So, if you haven't put in your hours for September please join our pathway project.

A woman from the Hawaii Center of Independent Living has made these recommendations: Build raised beds with benches, plant strong smelling herbs like rosemary, tine and sage, plant pleasant sounding plants like Chinese lanterns and honesty plants. Keep walkways clear. Paths should be 32 to 36 inches in width. Ramps and railings for buildings and a tone for our traffic light. (I have a call into the department that runs the state highways)

Thank you so much for being a part of NCG and taking the time to read this.

See you in the Garden!

Aloha Future Napili Community Gardeners,
We have compiled the list and will be allocating plots according to hours worked on preparing the garden. Please come by on Monday, September 5th from 9AM to 12PM to make sure we haven't made a mistake on your hours worked. We know most of you are off...LABOR DAY!

And while you're there...you can add a few more hours and help out with one of the following projects:

Cover crop seeding
K-line irrigation
Mauka berm line
Lay-flat hook-ups and laying out
Connections for plots
Anchor lay-flat
Stencil NCG on tools
Open hole in fence and set post

Please stop by for a bit, even if it's 30 minutes.
Any help at all will allow us to reach our goal of opening on September 10th.

We are in desperate need of your kokua...

The Napili Garden Council

P.S. A big shout out to Charlie, who started hauling compost to the garden on Friday at 4:30AM and ended at 5:00PM.

P.S.S The Saturday workday has been cancelled due to only one member showing interest...

"There seems to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth. The first is by war...This is robbery. The second by commerce, which is generally cheating. The third is by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle..."
